Treasure Island Weekend Recap
Well, we all managed to survive the most epic weekend of the year in San Francisco! Pretty Lights proved that they're still worthy of being deemed the best act of 2009, killing it at the Independent on Thursday night to kick off the weekend of amazing music. The Indie was packed so full of people dancing their asses off that the fire alarm actually went off from the heat (ok, and maybe a little from the wafts of smoke that filled the air as well)...
If you haven't already, go to www.prettylightsmusic.com and download their new album now!
Friday night those of us lucky enough to score tickets in one way or another gathered yet again at the Indie for a last minute surprise show by MGMT. The other side of the coin from Pretty Lights, MGMT lulled us with their mellow, psychedelic vibes while their hired effects crew stood behind us with two old-school projectors (you know, the kind they used in math class back in 7th grade) creating DIY visuals that managed to do justice to the band's larger-than-life reputation.
Saturday we all piled into busses to make the journey over to the happiest place on Earth for this one weekend of the year! With ferris wheels, fireworks, cupcakes, balloons strung hundreds of feet into the air, lights strewn everywhere, all the food and alcohol we could want, and a killer lineup of music lasting for 12 hours, it was like a fairy tale land for the San Francisco hipster. On top of that, we could not have possibly had a more beautiful day to be perfectly placed across the bay from one of the most breathtaking views in the world.
And just when we thought the magic was over, DJ Morale saved the night with a surprise set that blew even his most legendary sets out of the water, and left the crowd yelling for more...
Sunday was a colder day with an appropriately mellower lineup than Saturday. We layered and huddled in the VIP tent listening to The Decemberists, Grizzly Bear, and Edward Sharpe rock the stage while the wind whipped through the palm trees around us. The night ended with a celebratory production by The Flaming Lips, complete with giant balloons and confetti guns, closing off a magical weekend with a bang.
