FATLACE, SF - another cultural gem in Japantown
Hidden among small shops covered in illegible-to-most Japanese writing on Post & Laguna is a small shop called Fat Lace (which, apparently, has been open for the past decade)! Within the relatively small four walls is a treasure trove of goods fit to please any tuned-in individual with cultural/trend awareness living in SF and beyond. From Starfucker track frames (which are hard to find, but reportedly give a bit of sway) and bike components, to sneakers, men's clothing, skateboards and art, there really isn't anything a well-informed San Franciscan couldn't find in this store.

In addition to the "Headquarters," as they refer to the store, Fat Lace also has an online magazine that is updated daily on the reg.
For more info visit www.fatlace.com

AND...for the Ladies who like to stay informed on fashion, culture, and the blog world, there is Ladylike, an affiliate of Fatlace targeting the better sex. (wink)

NEW PEOPLE, San Francisco - J-Pop Arrives in Full Force!
This past weekend San Francisco's Japantown celebrated the grand opening of the new J-Pop (Japanese Pop Culture) multiplex, NEW PEOPLE.

Floor 2 (F2) is an impressive collection of uniquely Japanese clothing brands, sneakers, and special fashion collections...

The third Floor (F3) is the Superfrog Gallery, featuring art exhibits by well-known and well-established Japanese artists in mediums popular in contemporary Japanese art. The Gallery was closed when we ventured up, but we caught a preview of some resin pieces in the entry to the gallery...

Located at 1746 Post St. in San Francisco, New People features 4 stories of jam-packed Japanese pop culture gems, ranging from food, Japanese films, Japanese crafts and toys, Japanese fashion, and Japanese art.
The glass-fronted building welcomes visitors in with the clean modern decor that boasts the colorful playfulness of contemporary Japanese style. As we entered the basement floor, clusters of young girls dressed up in full Harajuku style outfits were gathered in tightly-knit gossip circles, their pigtails and rosy cheeks paying further tribute to their overly-exaggerated schoolgirl fantasy style. (We later learned that these girls were a part of New People's grand opening event that spanned this entire last weekend in Japantown).
The first floor (1F), which is also the main entrance, boasts a bright and spacious lounge area with a small cafe serving snacks, drinks, and SF's own Blue Bottle Coffee.
The main level (M) is an almost overwhelming array of Japanese Pop Culture goods: toys, books, gadgets, accessories...

In addition to the art in the gallery, the stairway has simple but appealing black and white line paintings on the walls from bottom to top...
Although we didn't venture downstairs, the Basement level is where New People will be premiering the hottest new films in Japan.

There's some really insane talent in San Francisco, ranging from Fonseca to 15 year old's who hit the Islands daily (see pics above). Regardless of age, the fixie community is tight, small, and thick with respect.
These kids are some of the sickest riders in the state...some of them were featured in the film
This guy, however, stood out to me immensely as by far the cleanest rider featured in the film. Ferrer Sanders....check him out:
